While
programs for the business community are
an integral part of Society Activities,
the importance of cultural and educational
events are not overlooked. For Japanese
visitors to San Antonio, the Society serves
as a bridge for introducing American culture
as well as San Antonio sights and scenes.
Programs on Japanese business, education,
language, art, literature, music, etc. offer
a window for Americans to gain an understanding
of Japan.
Examples of annual activities include
Shinenkai
(New Year’s) Potluck Dinner and Program,
Matsuri Festival, Asian American Festival,
and Bonnenkai (End of Year Holiday Party).
Special
Programs have included a Noh concert,
Taiko Drummers, guided tour of the Asian
Wing of the San Antonio Museum of Art,
exchanges of students and teachers, and
presentations by leading Japanese business
leaders. JASSA has been a strong supporter
and provided leadership in the redevelopment
of the Kumamoto-En garden at the San Antonio
Botanical Gardens and the Japanese Sunken
Gardens in Brackenridge Park.
The growth of the Toyota plant and its
suppliers has increased the frequency of
visits by Japanese delegations to San
Antonio. JASSA continues to play a role
in providing introductions and as a
resource for business people on both
sides of the ocean.
The
Society organizes and carries out its activities
through its
committee structure. Members
are urged to actively participate by joining
the committees which match their needs and
interests, to share their knowledge and
experience, and to support with their time
and talents the goals of the Society.
